The same thought crossed my mind! I'll test it and see how that works.

What I might do for the new version is provide an option to select which HTTP code to return from the 404 page ( 301, 200, 404 etc... )

I'll work on it this week. A new version should be out by Friday.

Yes, that would be what Google webmastertools recommend, 404 or 301 - while it doesn't seem to like 200 at all. The validation of identity for Google Webmastertools is to upload a file with a specific name - then it check if the file exist on my server, as well as asking for a few non-existing files. If the first says Yes, and the second says No - then I'm accepted as being me. That method of validation has not worked since installing 404 redirect handler, because of return code 200

404 Redirect: Version 1.3 released!

I've just released a new version of 404 Redirect.

The new version returns a HTTP 404 header by default with the redirect

I've tested it with Google webmaster tools and it validates.

You can choose which HTTP return code to return in 404_redirect.php at the top.

The new version is downloadable via here:

extensions.joomla.org/component/option,c...k_id,1519/Itemid,35/

To Upgrade, just overwrite the existing files with the new ones.

cheers,

DT

Great stuff, and delivers on promise!
Boys, upgrade your installs, worth the effort!
On other note: can I have a feature request?
I recently has redone for someone a site wich, contrary to best SEO practices has some inner addresses changed, and among these are pages with high PR figures (The decision wasn't mine). Struggling with the fact an ideea cam in my mind: what if 404 redirect would have the possibility to redirect specific querries to given addresses? A tool to specify that if someone wants the /dir1/aaa.html, wich is missing, to be redirected to /dir2/aaa.html, (so a replacement directory) or better, to /dir2/bbb.html, and, of course a nice 301 error ;)
Just asking, I'm allready excited by yout useful component!

Hi Szekely,

Thanks for the feedback.

I have been thinking of ways to add extensibility to 404 redirect.

On my own site, for work, I've customised the 404 redirection functions a little and I think it would be useful to allow users to easily add their own redirection rules.

Two things come to mind. Users could input 1 to 1 URL redirects but perhaps also specify a regular expression to test the 404 URL against and a custom redirect rule?

I'll take these ideas into consideration for the next version,

all the best with your site,

regards,

DT

Yepp, that's the ideea, I'd like to have both options, 1-1 redirects and rule-based ones, for start directory "replacement" should be fine and easy to implement!
