TOPIC: NEW! 404 Redirect Handler for Artio JoomSEF

Re:NEW! 404 Redirect Handler for Artio JoomSEF 17 years, 10 months ago #1365

On top of the mysterious 404's that are appearing on my sitemap, 404 Redirect is not working for them properly either.

Installation went through, i added rd add php mambot and published it, and i added the mambot script into the default 404 page.404 Redirect seems to be functioning correctly for urls i try, and on the backend is making logs.

If I type a random url that does not exist, ex: www.newgengamers.com/zzzz 404 redirect takes over as it should. However if i click one of the false 404 links that are appearing in my sitemap, it brings up an error on the browser saying:

The page isn't redirecting properly

Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.

Further proof that those 404's don't exist and shouldn't be appearing in my sitemap. I don't get why Joomap is putting them there, and they only appeared once i installed Joomsef.

I'm not sure why the text '404' is appearing in your sitemap listing.

I think that's a problem related to Artio or Joomap rather than 404 Redirect.

404 Redirect only manages redirections for invalid URLs

If I was you, I'd add a custom conditional check to the Joomap PHP code to check that the link text is not '404' before outputting to the page.

I tried to download the component to see where to put the check but the download link is not working at present. Maybe you can have a look at it yourself.

good luck!

Hello again,

I've run a few SEO diagnosis tools on my site, and several of them are saying:
------------------------------------------------------------
404 Check: FAILED
You are not returning a 404 error on non-existent pages. This means google could cache a large number of useless, duplicate pages on your site. Example:
www.YourSite.com/afgahsdfjkahsdfjkasdhfjaksdhfasdjf.html
----------------------------------------------------------

...That doesn't sound good. Is there cause to be worried?

Hi Tom,

If you want to check how google is responding to your 404 pages, check 404 redirect's 404 log.

Google has and IP range around 66.249.66.*

(I can't recall the exact range but you can google it!)

You can see the redirects, searches etc... there.

Furthermore, the next version of 404 redirect will return a 301 moved permanently header first rather than a straight redirect.

It should be out later this week<br><br>Post edited by: davidwhthomas, at: 2007/01/28 20:51

How about returning 404 when the component redirects to &quot;search&quot;? Or am I talking nonsense? :)
