thanks Pascal for his tips, however doing this will give you similar functionality as when you use the "Exclude source info" setting as mentioned earlier in this thread.

Which however also means you may face the same issues as when ignoring the Itemid (such as modules not switching properly, etc.). Moreover, rewriting at the .htaccess level may cause even more problems then doing this with the setting mentioned above, because that will ignore only Itemid. The .htaccess based version may ignore also other important variables, the have been part of the original non-SEF URL.
