TOPIC: Recommended upgrade procedure from J1.5 to 1.7

Recommended upgrade procedure from J1.5 to 1.7 13 years, 1 month ago #24917

What is the recommended way to transfer everything over from an old J1.5 running artio 3.8.2 and upgrading it all to J1.7 with artio 4.0.9?

This whole process scares me. I can get the content over just fine using SP Upgrade (over 1000 articles) but do I need to do anything special to move over the SEF URL's? The table that contains the URLS is far larger than I can dump and restore easily due to file size limits.

What tables must I copy over? Do the tables need to be updated?

Thanks!

Hi,

If you don't have any custom SEF URLs in your Joomla 1.5, I think there's no need to transfer URLs. Just make sure to set JoomSEF 4 the same way as JoomSEF 3 and the SEF URLs should be generated the same.
Otherwise you can export your SEF URLs using the Manage SEF URLs page and then just import them in JoomSEF 4. However if you have problems with file size limit, you'll probably need to ask your hosting to increase it or you could manually split the exported file to several smaller ones and import them one by one.

Anyway I'd recommend you to first transfer the website to new Joomla on some subdomain for example, and when you're sure that it works correctly, move it to the main domain.

Thanks for the advice. I exported the custom urls from the old site and attempted to import them into the new but they all gave error messages like this one:

Error importing line: INSERT INTO `oct1_sefurls` (cpt, sefurl, origurl, Itemid, metadesc, metakey, metatitle, metalang, metarobots, metagoogle, metacustom, canonicallink, dateadd, priority, trace, enabled, locked, sef, sm_indexed, sm_date, sm_frequency, sm_priority, trashed) VALUES ('159052', 'index2.php', 'index.php', '', '', '', '', '', '', '', '', '', '2009-01-28', '0', '', '1', '0', '1', '0', '0000-00-00', 'weekly', '0.5', '0');

Old system was running 3.8.2
New system is on 4.1.1

Any ideas or is there some export setting that I might have set incorrectly?

I got the new system to import the URLs but I have noticed that the new system is writing URLS differently than the old system did despite my having the settings the same on both.

The new system is making urls like this:
new.musicedmagic.com/advocacy/teacher-re...development-101.html

While the old system is doing this:
www.musicedmagic.com/advocacy/music-educ...development-101.html

The settings are the same but the new system is adding in extra (and redundant) category info. What am I missing here that would cause this?

This is caused by new categories structure in Joomla 1.7. Open the Manage Extensions page in JoomSEF and there open the Content extension parameters. Set "Add categories to URL" option to "Only last one" and on the Common tab disable the "Show Menu Title" option. After that the URLs should be created similar to the old system.
