TOPIC: Automating custom URLs

I am looking to automatically rename custom URLs, let me explain ....

Virtuemart installation, with the Virtuemart extension installed.

I would like to automatically rename the Virtuemart Product URLs to be /items/(sku number).html with the SKU number taken from the relevent jos_vm.products table.

leftbrain.desk2web.co.uk/g01.html for example (this is manually done obviously)

Anyone any ideas on how I could do this?
