TOPIC: Artio Duplicate Content

Re:Artio Duplicate Content 17 years, 8 months ago #1984

Hi Jiří,

for example i have /content.htm stored in custom redirects
and SEF url /content-2.htm

I edit /content-2.htm change it to /content.htm and try to save it as custom redirect, but Joomsef says "URL already exists in the database".

Would it be possible to have two or more non sef urls represented by the same SEF url

Maybe this could be done by manually removing 1,2,3...etc in the jos_redirection table.....

Hello,

well, you always need to compare the original URLs also.
So the question is how does the original URL for content.htm and content-2.htm look like?

You cannot have 1 SEF URL for 2 original URLs -- which one of them would you then like to use, when user enters it in his browser? How would you decide which one is the right at the moment?

What you need to prevent duplicates completely is to make Joomla (or JoomSEF if that is possible) always to generate the same original URLs. This means either ignoring e.g. Itemid or even some other variables and generate the links in the same way from anywhere in your site. This may however mean quite a lot of custom programming, but I see no other way.

If JoomSEF says that the URL already exists, that means there is already another original URL that uses that SEF URL, or that the URL is stored in 404 logs. (In 1.5.0 this was changed that any record from 404 logs is automatically rewritten, if you try to save custom URL; also you can turn 404 logs off).

Gentlemen,

I too have just bought the paid version 1.5, and honestly I am surprised by the easy responses here.

Don't get me wrong, I still think Joomsef is a great component, but that doesn't stop it from having a real issue in this latest version.

I had version 1.3 running perfectly, WITHOUT any duplicate URL's. Saved a lot of custom URLs to this end.
I saved the whole custom url databse, uninstalled 1.3 free version, installed 1.5, reimported the custom url's and hey presto! Now almost ALL content has the dreaded -2.html appended. Aaarggh!
Definitely something that I did NOT experience in version 1.3, so I would be very happy if someone had a solution for this on the coding end, or at the very least an explanation.

Yep, I followed the exact same procedure as with the previous versions, but Joomsef now insist on appending numbers to my content DESPITE the custom URL table.

JoomSEF is an SEO tool and marketed as such, so anything that destroys SEO rather than enhance it should i.m.h.o. be treated with some priority.

Anyone from the team who can shed some light on this has my cheers earned! :-)

Tested & confirmed:

Version 1.5
1.5 gives all duplicate urls, even for absolute single content.
Joomla 1.0.12 (FreeBSD, PHP4). Bummer, Google will not be happy :-)
I suspected linked titles were the problem so I removed them all, experimented with unique ItemIDs, etc., etc. Clearing tables in between of course. Still ALL urls remain duplicate.
ItemID ignore setting is not an option for me, as I use Extended Menu and that is broken if this is set to yes.

Version 1.3.3 reinstalled
Deinstalled 1.5, reinstalled 1.3.3 and hey presto, everything is fine again, WITHOUT ANY duplicate url.

Only changing factor: JoomSEF version.

Yes, there are many issues with Joomla's ItemIDs, but they are not the cause here, the site is exactly the same in both cases.

Hope you find the reason in the JoomSEF code and solve this soon, because JoomSEF is indeed a great component, and it would be a shame if people turn away from it because of this big issue.

Hi Rob,
thank you very much for this valuable data. On my sites (both joomla 1.0.11 and 1.0.12) I use joomsef v. 1.2.4 because it works great. No duplicate URLs either. I was very surprised to see duplicate URLs when I installed v.1.4.2. At first I thought this is Joomla v.1.0.12 problem but now it is obvious it isn't so. I really dont know what to do, Im stuck on version 1.2.4. Its ok at the moment, but what about the future...
Kind regards,
Zeljko

Hello all,

well one of the reasons will probably be, that the URLs generated by 1.3.x are slightly different than those generate by 1.5.x. So if you upgade to 1.5.x and do not upgrade your DB, you may get duplicate links.

Please use the script provided in
www.artio.cz/en/downloads/utils/joomsef-...cript-1-5-0/download

to convert any earlier version links to 1.5.x format. You are highly encouraged to make a DB backup first or do this on testing site!

Otherwise, the duplicates have been discussed many times on this forums and I believe there is not much more to be said. If you want us to comment some of them, please post here always the URL in SEF and original form (the duplicate and the "original"). We will try to explain or fix if a bug will be revealed (we do not say there are none).
