Some guys from "Kanga internet" released a "patched" version of artio sef. They seem to have removed some ads or something.

as a joomla developer myself i wonder .. are these acceptable practices? i mean, you invest time and money into your product, and hope that you get some return by ads, and someone else just deletes some lines and "there's a new product"?

i'm not sure if you know about these guys, but i wonder what your opinion is (since it's your product). I know i would go mad about such things :)

It's all legal and doesn't break the GPL license - what Artio or Kanga did. Artio were allowed to take existing GPL code and use it to build their own product, and they decided to insert ads. That's all fine. And Kanga were allowed to take their product and modify it and release that, no probs there either. Welcome to the wonderful world of open-source :D
Seriously, if it wasn't all free to begin with (and allowing anyone to modify and re-release), then this component probably wouldn't even exist!

It's not a problem of weather we LIKE it or not , it's the contract you virtually sign by downloading their component. If someone does not like ads he should pay or at least ASK permission to remove them. It's just as simple as that.
I was wondering if KANGA did ask for this permission (i really doubt that)

I am pretty pissed that sites like KANGA get credit for other peoples work, and they do it JUST to get traffic (as you can see on their site, they are some sort of hosting company) and NOT to get involved in the community in any way.

Open source is a a wonderful world, but you mistake open source and wild west practices, and that is not the idea.

And as you know there are Commercial SEF components, and i think even successful ones.

friends, I can understand that you are pissed on. A lot of work you did, and the quality of Artio is quite good now. BUT, your advirtise for some webpages...may have negative effects for all regular Artio users. And sorry, nobody is installing Artio 1.3 or 1.4 now. In fact, everybody is installing the newest version, so everybody is doing advirtising for you or your sponsors.
Can you imagine, that this does have some V E R Y negative effects to all Artio users. I wonder myself, that the amount of visitors and my Pageranks are decreasing since I use Artio. Operation my website without was more sucessful, than using it.
I'm not sure, (can't be), but perhaps this has something to do with that issue. If so, better sell Artio for some bucks...that better than to have a SEF function with less and less vistors.

Andre, you are mistaking what you think is morally right with what is legal. Read the GPL - www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html - your position is not tenable!
