I fixed my problem by using the second half of the .htaccess rather than the first.

I saw a video made by some other guy and noticed that he was using the second section.

Here's the .htaccess section I used in the end (which is different from the instructions as I'm not using third party bits).

Um, you are suppose to use the 3rd party one. That's what artio joomSEf is, a 3rd party SEF component. If you are using joomla's built in sef, you use the first section, if you are using ANY others, you use the second and comment out the first.
