I have read everything and tried out everything suggested for the following problems, but nothing seems to help. Also I have used JoomSEF on around 10 websites before (on other hosts) without any problems.

Now for my latest website, my client insisted to host it on Networksolution. They have the following specs:

Linux 2.6.15.6
Apache 1.3.37
PHP 4.4.2
Mysql 4.1.20

The following problem:

Installing JoomSEF and using the standard .htaccess file gives a 403 access forbidden error. Commenting out the line \"Options FollowSymLinks\" (as suggested on the forum in this case) makes the site work. The URLs are translated correctly (in the address bar of the browser), but the only page which displays following any link is ALWAYS the home page.

There are several suggestions in the forum to fix the problem of always having the home page displayed. Someone has posted another .httaccess file (makes no difference at all in my case), someone suggests to use \"/\" instead of \".htm\" as an extension (displays the URL's differently but nothing else changes) and uncommenting the \"# RewriteBase\" to specifying a directory name (my Joomla files and the .htaccess are in a directory called \"htdocs\") results in an internal server error.
