TOPIC: Will a sef URL be created if a 301 exists for it

Will a sef URL be created if a 301 exists for it 12 years, 10 months ago #27026

Hi,
My question is this:
With version 3.9.2
Will JoomSEF recreate a SEF url if it already exists as an "old" url in 301 redirects?

For example, lets say I have a url:

www.somesite.com/url-a

and I want it to be
www.somesite.com/url-b

Then obviously I create a 301 direct or url-a to url-b

With me so far?

Its also required (from what I can tell) To delete url-a from the SEF url section, otherwise the 301 redirect is ignored.

So now lets say that url-a is an automatically created url, so that when the site was crawled, the url was created.

When the site is crawled again, will JoomSef create url-a again, or will it first check the 301 redirects and see that no action needs to be taken.

My suspicion is that JoomSef is creating url-a again, despite it existing in the 301 redirects, which in turn, prevents the 301 redirect from working..

Clarification on this would be very much appreciated
Thanks
Dylan

Hi,

You are right, JoomSEF will create url-a again in the database. To achieve the desired function, leave both url-a and url-b in the database, and using Manage SEF URLs page edit url-b and in the Aliases section set url-a as its alias. Alias shouldn't be ignored like 301 redirect if url-a exists in the database.

I know it's confusing, we already plan to solve this. The way it works now is due to historical reasons, because 301 redirects feature evolved from another functionality which was never intended for this purpose.
