To see the .htaccess file you can use a ftp-client called Filezilla. It's excellent for tis kind of work, because it also works well to change the access rights on files.

On what version of PHP are you? I had similar problems and it was related to JoomSEF not being compatiblem with PHP 5. When we had the site moved to a PHP 4 server it started working.
Our problem now is that JoomSEF generateds so incredibly many MySQL-calls, that we have reached the roof of the allowd calls of 360.000 calls per hour set by the hosting company.
I have no idea what causes this..

Check if the PHP version is in the 4.x.x branch. I have found that JoomSEF does not work on PHP 5.x.x

It's a standard Joomla .htaccess file from version 1.0.12, and yes, I have commented out on the right places. Just to have it said: I have more that 30 Joomla installations running, so I do know what is where.
I copied the files over from the old site. Then I uploaded the core Joomla-installation and overwrote the copied ones - in case there was any problems with corrupted files.
I also re-installed JoomSEF - just to have it done.
I believe I have done all there is to do looking at it from a seasoned developers viewpoint.
My personal believe is that there might be compatibility issues with the new host.
That is also why I ask in the official forums of Artio - to get a comment or suggestion how to rectify the problem.

I just turned off JoomSEF, so the built in SEF in Joomla took over. Everything works fine with Joomla's sef, and it stops working when JoomSEF is turned on again. I have done all the purge-stuff as well in JoomSEF.
The database is on the new host, and I imported all data from the old one. There was no problems with the import, and as mentioned abobe - everything works as expected without JoomSEF.
The only links that actually works with Joomsef turned on, is the first level links that goes to the section pages.

After moving a site to a new host, almost all the pages returns a 404 error. When I turn off JoomSEF the site behaves normally.
What should I look for in the configuration to resolve this issue? The site is in production and there is pointing in hundreds of links to the sub-pages so this is rather urgent to solve for us.
I have upgraded to JoomSEF 1.5, and it is the paid version.

I have just checke the http-headers, and it actually sends a 301 when I click categories and pages.
Here is the header info I get:
HTTP/1.x 301 Moved Permanently
Date: Wed, 18 Apr 2007 20:58:45 GMT
Server: Apache/2.0.59
Content-Encoding: gzip
Vary: Accept-Encoding
So, it looks like there is a bug somewhere. Any ideas what I could do to rectify this problem? It's pretty important to get a solution - a temporary or permanent one.. My client is PISSED :(

I have just installed version 1.4.2 paid version, and it does not rewrite the url's at all. Any clues what might be the problem? I have done everything the installer suggests regarding the .htaccess file, and actually version 1.4 did rewrite as it should.
I also had the problem with all url's sending me to the frontpage with version 1.4, so I was hoping the paid version would solve that. But now all the url's are with Joomla's inbuilt SEF instead.

Yes. I use it at the url above. It gives url's like /smf-1.html and not the full title of the post or the titles of the forums.
I have tried it with version 1.1 of SMF and Joomla 1.0.11
With those versions it gives the url's as it's supposed to.<br><br>Post edited by:

I wonder if I am am the only one that has problems getting the payed plugin for SMF to work with SMF 1.1.2? Are there any plans to get it to work soon, or do I have to ask for the money to get refunded? As it is now, it only shows the urls as www.dittnettsted.no/smf-3.html and does not rewrite the url's as it's supposed to.
We use Joomla version 1.0.12 and SMF version 1.1.2

Yeah. I have the same problem, so this must be a bug somewhere.
I have JoomSEF version 1.4 and SMF extension installed.
