TOPIC: automatic sef urls not generated as expected

automatic sef urls not generated as expected 13 years, 11 months ago #19504

The SEF URLs that JoomSEF has generated are not what I expected. For example, I have URLs that look like this:
www.mydomain.com/mypage/mypage
but I expected them to look like this:
www.mydomain.com/mysection/mypage

Is there a way to accomplish this without having to manually edit each and every URL?

Hello,

I believe it is possible. However, it may depend on component and settings.
Could you please give specific example? - the original non-SEO URL and its SEO equivalent generated by JoomSEF.

We should then be able to give you a hint, how to set configuration or what might be wrong.

After some investigation I see where part of the problem is (this is a client's site, so I'm not intimately familiar with the organization), but I'm still not sure of how to solve it.

Some context: We have a section, categoy, and page all named "Sainte-Anne en bref". The original URL is
index.php?option=com_content&catid=17&id=49&view=article&Itemid=3
which JoomSEF changed to
sainte-anne-en-bref/sainte-anne-en-bref
which makes sense (categoryname/pagename).

Within the "Sainte-Anne en bref" section there is a category called "Profil" with a page named "Profil". The original URL for that page is
index.php?option=com_content&catid=60&id=55&view=article&Itemid=106
and the SEF URL is
profil/profil

What the client would like is to have the generated URLs in the format
sectionname/pagename
i.e.
sainte-anne-en-bref/profil

I foresee some problems with this, if there are two pages within different categories in a section with the same name, but I believe JoomSEF can number those so that they don't end up with the same URL. Is there a way to have JoomSEF generate the URL with this format? Or do I just explain to the client that they are getting what appears to be a repeated name in the URL because the category and page names are the same? She knows that she can customize the URLs as she likes, it's just a pain with a fairly large site.

That's not quite right. What they want is to have the generated URLs in the format
sectionname/categoryname/pagename
but have JoomSEF automagically trim those where the section and category or category and page have the same name, so that
sainte-anne-en-bref/profil/profil
would be
sainte-anne-en-bref/profil

I think the sectionname/categoryname/pagename format should be doable, but I've warned her to expect that she will probably have to customize URLs where the section and category or category and page have the same name.

Hello,

Yes, you're right, you can set JoomSEF to create URLs like:
section/category/page
Go to Manage Extensions in JoomSEF and open the Content extension parameters. There, enable both the "Show Category" and "Show Section" options.

Unfortunately, you are also right with the need for manual customization of the URLs that have the same section and category or category and page names.

Best regards,
