I tried to download the free JoomSEF but the archive I've downloaded seems broken.
My mac cannon decompress it. I tried with others archive utilities but others force quit...

When I try to install the component directly by URL-installing in joomla, it installs, shows the welcome document and is present in the admin menu, but I it simply doesn't work.
I think my Apache server decompresses it as far as it can, but not all files can be decompressed.

If you could fix this problem it would be great.

I think the package file is okay, I have just checked it right now, but I am afraid MAC OS has some problem with the packages. On Windows and Unix/Linux they are uncopressed just fine.
If the installation process showed you the welcome document with no error, then the installation went fine most likely. However, you may still need to check the configuration and finalize some steps manually - like checking if .htaccess file is present or turning the global SEO settings on. Please, follow the documentation and FAQs.

I understand, but even the component in joomla admin part is not working properly. On the JoomSEF configuration page the html is not complete and I see un ugly page with only the left side of the configutation form. That's why I thought the files are decompressed but with some errors, maybe in the JoomSEF configutation component.
I checked the .htaccess file, tried to comment the line with Options +FollowSymLinks.
My Joomla installation is almost-virgin, with only joomfish component.
And I think that even if I did something wrong, the admin-side part of JoomSEF would be working well...

If you are using JoomFish, make sure that JfRouter is disabled.
As regards the broken layout in admin, that has been fixed in version 3.3.2.

It is not avaialble in downloads section yet, but you can use online upgrade to get it.
