Today I updated the Joomla CMS at www.izzat.com.au from 2.5.6 to 2.5.14 and all the links no longer work (homepage is fine), which leads me to believe the issue may be with the SEF component. I have inherited this site from another provider and have not used SEF before.

I paid for the latest version, to see if that would fix the issue, but I cannot install it. If I go to the upgrade tab and:
1) Click on enter download ID, it goes to a white screen saying "ARTIO JoomSEF Configuration file Writeable".
2) Click Upgrade From ARTIO Server it says "File com_joomsef.zip cannot be served!"
3) Attempt to upload com_joomsef4.zip it just goes to a white screen.

The site is currently live with broken links. If you could respond asap that would be great.

UPDATE: I've now reinstalled the site from a backup. However, I've also installed the site at www.viewmywebsite.com.au where I/we can work out how to update Joomla and the SEF plugin hopefully.

Currently the SEF doesn't work on this new domain, I assume since it wasn't specified by the other provider when first purchasing the plugin

Hi,

I've just tested JoomSEF 4.4.3 on Joomla 2.5.14 and it was working correctly. Check your directories permissions in Joomla's System Information whether all of them are writable.
White screen means some error in PHP was encountered. Please check your server's errors logs and post the error reported there.

The problem is not JoomSEF 4.4.3 on Joomla 2.5.14, since I am unable to start the upgrade to JoomSEF 4.4.3. I am currently stuck on 4.0.4.

When I go to the upgrade tab it says I have to enter my Download ID. When I click on the link to do this a white screen comes up saying "ARTIO JoomSEF Configuration file Writeable"

The error log states:

From what I can tell all directories seem to be writeable, but let me know if there are specific ones I should check. I'm not sure what you mean by "In Joomla's System Information".

You can check whether directories are writable directly in Joomla by opening the Site -> System Information menu and there clicking the Directory Permissions tab. But this seems like a different problem.

The errors you posted are from Apache's error log, try to find the file with PHP's error log. The white screen most likely means some PHP error has been encountered. JoomSEF version 4.0.4 is quite old, so it's possible that it isn't compatible with Joomla 2.5.14. You could either uninstall your current JoomSEF and install the new one (losing your current SEF URLs and configuration), or try to update the files and database manually. We could also do the manual update for you as a paid support service.

There don't appear to be any related error in the PHP error log. The last one was on Aug17:
[14-Aug-2013 07:21:18 Australia/Brisbane] PHP Fatal error: Call to a member function getChildren() on a non-object in /home/izzatcom/public_html/components/com_contact/router.php on line 150

To clarify, I am now running JoomSEF4.0.4 on Joomla 2.6.6. I cannot initiate the upgrade process for JoomSEF. The component works fine itself, just not the upgrade part.

I would like to avoid uninstalling and setting up again since I am unfamilar with JoomSEF and don't know how the original developer configured it. How could I do a manual update. I tried uploading the JOOMSEF 4.4.3 via the extension manager but that had similar problems.
