TOPIC: canonical links

canonical links 12 years, 8 months ago #29173

Hi There, I wonder if you can help. I have at least 8 references to 1 particular product throughout many different categories. When the sef link is generated it always takes the 1st Menu instance of the the products as the master product. Is that right? Is there anyway I can force it to take the 1st menu instance that is say 3 levels down instead? We are trying to avoid duplicate content/urls but would rather the 3rd level products were defined as the masters. If that makes any sense.

Many thanks

Derek

In addition to this - I have another problem - I have a menu that is generated Item ID that are Lower (ie were genereated first) than the ones I would like. Is there away change the preferential order of the ItemIDs that are used to generate the SEF links.

So to cut a long story short. We would like to have just 1 URL for each page BUT the Item ID that is being used to generate these SEF urls isn't always the one we would like.

OR can you advise - is it OK to have duplicate URLs in terms of SEO. Is there a way of marking all duplicates as canonical or all referencing the same pge that google will be happy with.

Hi,
I'm sorry for the delay.
You cannot set the priority for ItemIDs in JoomSEF, but you can set which ItemIDs should be ignored. I'm not sure if it will work exactly as you want it, but you can try setting the ItemIDs that you don't want to be used in JoomSEF's VirtueMart extension parameters on the Common tab using the "Ignore Itemids" field. You can set multiple ItemIDs separated by comma.

From SEO point of view duplicate content (two pages looking very similar with different URLs) is not good. But if you pick one of the pages as default and create canonical link from other pages to that one, Google should accept it. But you would need to set the canonical links manually in JoomSEF.
