TOPIC: update has file permission errors

update has file permission errors 14 years, 4 months ago #12882

I'm running Joomla 1.5.18
trying to update from Joomla SEF 3.4.3 to 3.6.5
its giving me this long list of red file permissions errors

do I have to go thru and change permissions for all these files and folders manually in filezilla
to get the install to work

then, do I need to go back and manually set them back again to be secure????
eek

also, is this going to break my VIRTUEMART extension (version 2.0.11)
should I update the virtuemart extension first maybe?

thanks in advance
love the program
got some permissions issue here

Hi,

Yes, the files need to be writable for Apache server, otherwise there's no way to update them.
As regards the VirtueMart extension - we've never tested this version with the newest JoomSEF, but I think it should work. Otherwise, there's no problem in upgrading it after JoomSEF upgrade.

And since there are quite a few versions between 3.4.3 and 3.6.5, make a backup of your site and database before upgrading, just in case anything would go wrong.

Best regards,

I guess my main question is this. After I change all those permissions to 777 to get thiis update installed (and there's ALOT of files AND folders here) , do I need to go back and change them all back to what they were before?
(so much for AUTO updates)

folders should be 755
and files should be 644
I forget now what they were...

I think the best solution would be to set an owner for the files to www-data (or any other user that represents your Apache server). That way, all files can be 644 and folders 755 and the web server will still have permissions to overwrite them. It should work like this by default if you've installed JoomSEF using the standard Joomla! installer correctly.
