When I attempt to upgrade to the paid version, I get the following error:
"JoomSEF Upgrade Manager. File does not exist in upgrade package /admin/assets/strings.php

Attempted to install free 3.4.3 and received the same error

Verified strings.php is not in the package.

Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

well, this is because the file in question has been already removed from the install package, but because you are upgrading over several releases, it tries to find it to upgrade from 3.3.5 to 3.3.6.
The upgrades are made by step o 1.

there is several ways to proceed:

1) you need to check and edit upgrade files (in installation package, upgrade folder) numbered 3.3.5, 3.3.6, ... and remove the strings.php directive from there.
2) Or you can download some older free package, e.g. 3.4.1 and try to upgrade with it. (or 3.3.6 first)
As the last step, use the paid version to upgrade free to paid version.
3) maybe easiest - backup your existng URLs, uninstall, install the latest package and reimport URLs
