Installed Artiosef no problem. Changed htaccess.txt to htaccess. My htaccess file reads almost the same as the example in the documentation for Artiosef - my htaccess is a later version (2009-11-03) than the example given in the documentation (2008-01-30) but as far as I can see there's no real difference.

So I then switch on SEF URLs in Joomla's global configuration and get a 404 error whenever I click on a link taking me anywhere off my home page.

I'm a complete novice with this kind of thing so answers in words of one syllable would be really helpful.

Hello,

Make sure the .htaccess file is named correctly - there must be the dot at the beginning. If this is not the problem, go to JoomSEF Control panel, expand the SEF Status tab on the right side and check that everything is enabled.
