My client is migrating a multi-thousand page website from a CMS called WMaker to Joomla 1.6.

WMaker creates the URLs for you with no control. He currently has nearly 100,000 site visitors and thousands of pages to bring in.

WMaker has created the pages with underscores "_" in the URL.

Joomla strips the underscores.

How do we keep the underscores in the URL? Is there a way to do this in Joomla 1.6 and with JoomSEF 4?

If we find no solution to being able to maintain the URLs I understand we can do 301 redirects. However, my client is uncomfortable with this and this option is off the table.

yes, in JoomSEF, you can define underscore "_" as allowed character. You can also customize character translations, so you can define what characters get translated to the underscore chracter.

Check basic and advance configuration settings in JoomSEF.

Also, custom created URLs can then contain the underscore character.

Alternativelly, write an URL examples to show what type of URLs you need to create.
