I seem to be having some problems with my 404 error pages on my site. This is a serious problem to me because a lot of sites link to mine, but after installing JoomSEF it seems that all the old links go to 404 pages, as opposed to just going back to the home page.

Here is an example:

www.carcomputer.co.uk/component/page,sho...irtuemart/Itemid,26/

However, when I manually enter in a URL that doesn't exist, such as www.carcomputer.co.uk/23y4twhfcvnbi3rwad/, it redirects to the home page if it can't find anything.

I have checked with my host and they say that everything is okay their end, so this has led me to believe it is something I need to change in JoomSEF.

I hope someone can help me as this is causing me a lot of grief! I look forward to a response. Thanks,

the URL you have posted as an example seems quite strange. I think it is not a valid URL even with buit-in Joomla SEO.
The error you are getting is not coming out from JoomSEF, but directly from Joomla. It simply does not understand the URL - and it is telling you it cannot find the component that should be responsible for displaying this URL.

You could solve this situation quite simply by redirecitng all URLs starding with www.carcomputer.co.uk/component/ to your homepage. You could setup a rule for this in your .htaccess file.
