I fixed this on my own and figured I post my results here:

In my case I have a very large website with over 10,000 pages and over 100,000 links ion the database. When you clicked on any link form the hom e page the site would hang. I noticed that the site was running a lot of queries that seemed to hang the whole site. In looking further into the database I noticed that the column that is primarily used for these queries was the "oldurl" which was not indexed. I added an index to that column and now my site is up and 10xs faster than it was before.

Hopefully this will be changed in the next release of the ArtioSEF Component.

Hello Rob,

we are glad that you have fixed the problem. And you are also right that having the oldurl column indexed is very important. However, JoomSEF installation script includes creation of this key since version 1.3.0 or something around it.

So if you have installed this from scratch I cannot imagine why the column was not indexed. Havent you just upgraded from some very old version without removing the DB table?

Thanks again Jiri. As you say, my photography page is working okay now. I had to set the Expose extension to 'skip' in the configuration. But editing the menu in the admin area with the menu manager is not possible because when I click edit, it doesn't display any of the menu items. In fact, there's nothing except the menu name. I would also like to have the urls without the itemids appended to them at the end. I'm afraid of changing the configuration section too much just in case I'll muck up the site again. What needs to be done to have the urls without the itemids? Apart from these issues, everything else seems to work fine now just the same as before. I really appreciate the help.

To ignore the Itemid part of the URL, set the setting "Exclude source info " to "yes". To maintain same functionality, you may also set "Reappend source" to "yes", but then your URLs will look like: yoursite.xy/some-sef-url?Itemid=xy.
