I just installed JoomSEF on Joomla! 1.0.11 - no matter what I do with .htaccess, I get a 500 Internal Server Error - no matter what I set ReWrite base to. In fact, the default htaccess.txt causes the same 500 error when copied .htaccess. Also, the little but of stub code that is suggested when you install also gives the 500 error. Any ideas? I'm sure this is somthing stupid, but it's got me foxed!

Hi Jim,

well there can be plenty of reasons.
1. check that usage of .htaccess is supported and allowed in the Apache configuration
2. check that the RewriteEngine line is not commented
3. check that there are no typos or extra chars is .htaccess

If the error appears immidiatelly when you rename htaccess.txt then either something is already wrong in that file or it is Apache configuration.

Thanks....OK, getting somewhere, now.

I'm 99% sure it's the Apache config too since the vanilla Joomla htaccess.txt breaks it. I can use .htaccess files fine to protect directories so my question is.....which apache config switch do I need to look at?

Looking at the log, I have:

[Tue Sep 12 13:52:57 2006] [alert] [client xx.xx.xx.xx] /home/.sites/10/site59/web/.htaccess: RewriteEngine not allowed here
[Tue Sep 12 13:55:13 2006] [alert] [client xx.xx.xx.xx] /home/.sites/10/site59/web/.htaccess: Options not allowed here

OK, I cracked it.....

Need to set

AllowOverride All

in the .htaccess section of httpd.conf (or access.conf in /etc/httpd/conf if using Cobalt)
