Bit new to all this SEF stuff, so may be a silly question, but when should you purge the SEF Urls? Is it something that you should do manually? Does it do it automatically? What actually happens when you do it? And why should one do it? Can somebody please explain exactly what the process is?

I have been trying for about a month to activate SEF urls on my site www.skiguru.net. I have installed joomsef. When I switch on SEO in General Configuration, I keep getting 404 errors -
404 Not Found
The requested URL /en/news/index.php does not exist.

Not sure exactly what parts of the .htaccess to use...

Not sure whether each url needs to be renamed or will it do this automatically?

Pulling my hair out, and I didn't have much to start with, please help...
