Hints to Choose a Good Open Source

This is a short guide of how to choose an open source sofware that will be a plus for your business and is not likely to become a nightmare.

Professional Support Available

Make sure there is at least one company that is offering commerical support for the open source product you are interested in. Of course more is better as you have wider choise and also the more commercial support providers there is the more popular (better) the softwaar may be.

If you are not a fan or developer yourselft, it will be probably better to prevent usage of open source where no professionals are offering their support services and you would be dependant on its community only. It is nice to have supportive community that may be willing to help you solve the problems, but that may be both time and knowledge demanding; so it is even better, if you know there is always someone you can hire and get the job done.

Please note that very often it is only about an point of view - sometime the same aspect may be consider both con and pro. Also, not all open source project are same. What is true for one may not apply for another.

faster developement; often the open source projects are backuped by a community of developers and supporters, who are contributing to the project and thus moving it forward

easier to be compromised; as the sources are often available to anyone with no restrictions, in case there is an error in the source code, possible attackers may reveal it more easily and misuse it to compromise the system security
less organized, unpredictable; this may differ significantly depending on whether a specific open source product is backuped by a company or well-organized group of developers or whether it is more like an free, volunteers-based project -- in the first case, there may be almost no difference compared to any commercial product, however, if it tends to be more like the second case, there may be lack of clear planning for bugfixes or new features and you may be forced to do some things on your own

What is Open Source Software

Open Source Software (alias 'OSS') is a software where its source code are made available by the author for the users and often to the public as well. This has several major advantages, especially if you consider further tailoring the software for your needs or want to know (or at least be able to learn) what exactly the code you are using is doing.

Please note, that open source does not neccessarily mean free, although very often it is the case. However, there exist many different license types, where some of those may be almost as restrictive as for a closed source software and some have almost no restrictions at all.

Please note that due to this change a minimum version of Joomla! that JoomSEF 4 requires is 2.5.6. Joomla! 1.6, 1.7 and older versions of 2.5 are no longer supported! Make sure that your Joomla! is up-to-date before updating JoomSEF.
